Frequently Asked Questions
What are your condition standards?
The items we sell are always clean and wearable or generally usable. We inspect each item very carefully to guarantee quality, authenticity, and its condition. If there are flaws with an item, it will be disclosed in the description and pictured to the best of our ability for transparency. Many of our items also come with original (vintage !!) tags, boxes, dust bags, and authenticity cards. When these are available with the item being sold, they will be mentioned in the item description.
The Philly Closet condition standards are categorized as:
Mint / Pristine, Excellent, Pretty Pretty Good, Decent, and Fair.
Mint / Pristine: Items show zero signs of being worn and include original tags, the box, or a dust bag.
Excellent: Items are clearly unused, but tags are not attached and boxes or dust bags are not included.
Pretty, Pretty Good: Items show very minor signs of wear. Footwear may show wear such as light scuffing at the soles, insoles, and heels. Handbags and accessories may show wear such as lightly worn corners, light scratches and interior wear.
Decent: Items show moderate signs of “wear and tear.” Footwear may show wear such as scuffing on the soles, insoles, and heels. Handbags, accessories, and jewelry may show wear such as worn corners, moderate scratches, and interior wear.
Fair: Handbags show signs of heavy wear such as worn corners, significant scratches, or extreme interior “wear ad tear”. Holes in fabric will be pictured and noted. It is assumed to be sold “as-is” if the buyer intends to further repair.
Why am I being charged tax if your items are secondhand or pre-owned?
The Philly Closet has a fiduciary responsibility and is obligated by law to collect sales tax on orders shipped to U.S. jurisdictions that charge sales tax. I am running a small business, operating and paying taxes just like the big corporations (well, not quite….)
How do I use a discount code?
During checkout, enter your code into the promo/gift card box and click Apply. Your discount on qualified items will be reflected in your order total. Items that do not qualify for discounts will have the phrase “Coupons and discounts are not available for this product” in their item description. Only one promotional code can be used per order.
What forms of payment do you accept?
The Philly Closet accepts all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover) through Stripe, our ecommerce payment processor. This also allows you to also use ApplePay. Paypal is also an accepted form of payment.
How can I make a return?
To send a return, please follow these steps:
Pack your return in a sturdy box or bag with adequate padding, if needed, to protect the item.
A prepaid shipping label is included with U.S. orders. If you choose to use this, $12.95 will be deducted from your refund amount. Or, you can take your return package to the shipping carrier of your choice.
We recommend a return shipping method that allows you to track the package to make sure it reaches us. Because we cannot assume responsibility for packages lost or damaged in transit, we recommend you insure your package. Postage and insurance costs, as well as original shipping charges, are not refundable.
email alicia@thephillycloset.com for additional instructions.
Items noted as FINAL SALE within the description cannot be returned.
Is it safe to shop secondhand merchandise during a pandemic?
The Philly Closet is following CDC, state and local guidelines to help ensure we keep our community safe. With reference to the coronavirus pandemic, based on what is now known about the poor survivability of COVID-19 on surfaces, there is a low risk of spread from items or packaging that are shipped over a number of days, and at room temperature, as is the case with all retailers.
The Philly Closet takes additional precautions by thoroughly cleaning and/or sanitizing all items. Ready-to-wear items are steamed, and accessories, handbags, footwear, and home décor are cleaned and wiped down with sanitizer.
According to the CDC, COVID-19 transmission via contaminated surfaces is not considered a common way to contract the virus, but, as an additional precaution, we recommend you wash or sanitize your hands after touching packages or products from any retailer, including The Philly Closet.
How do I track my order?
You will receive an email notification including tracking information when your package has shipped. Orders placed after 12:00pm PT (3:00pm ET) will ship the next day.
Unless otherwise indicated, all orders ship through USPS Priority Mail or UPS Ground and are expected to be delivered within 3-5 business days.
Please be aware that orders with multiple items may ship separately. In these cases, you will receive email notifications and tracking information for each shipment.
When is a signature needed for my shipment?
The Philly Closet requires a signature during shipment for orders with any item over $1,500. UPS will need to obtain a signature from an adult 21 or older. You may contact UPS to create a ‘My Choice’ account to personalize some of your shipping preferences, including redirecting shipments to a UPS customer center.
Why is it sustainable to shop with The Philly Closet?
As fast fashion continues to scale and remain a damaging force for humans, animals, and our environment, I want to have an honest conversation about our society’s consumption habits and why it’s important to consider secondhand shopping. My ultimate goal is to extend the lifecycle of amazing items that simply need to be found and to support a more circular and sustainable economy.
Reselling items ultimately reduces unnecessary carbon emissions. It eliminates or reduces the need for new products while being dependent on new, raw materials and using natural resources.
I am committed to raising awareness of the fashion industry’s largely problematic carbon footprint. I want to educate consumers about the benefits of shopping secondhand, as well as giving them incredible pieces to love and cherish (and hopefully resell again in the future!).
